In an older neighborhood in Lexington, MA, a family was making do in a small bungalow.

However, more space was necessary. The house needed to reflect the nature and character of their family.

As the center of the first floor plan, the staircase become the axis around which they would live.

The stair was designed with generous proportions, open on three sides, with a fireplace, built-in bench, glass and mahogany railings and a recycling center.

A continuous band of windows on the second story lightened the exterior and added special qualities to the upstairs spaces.

Exterior porches and stairways open the interior to the sun and yard, stone walls and curved steps.

Overall, to help give the home stature, we squared the house, and gave it a full second floor with loft areas.

The house went from 1,700 Sq. Feet to over 4,200 sq. feet and feels entirely new. To complete the project, we re-landscaped the lot with terraced stone walls.

Both the family and the neighbors are very pleased.
